To explore Rameshwaram and Kanyakumari was on top priority for me in south India as Most of the people prefer to visit Goa and Kerala. I had been planning for Rameshwaram for many months but everytime it got diverted to other directions due to its extreme southernmost location alongwith very limited connectivity from the mainland. So are you wondering about what are the best places to visit in Rameshwaram? So through this blog here I am listing about the best ideas and places to visit in Rameshwaram that will definitely quench your thirst for spirituality and peace.

Rameshwaram is a small beautiful island located in the “Gulf of Mannar” and standing firmly in the middle of India and Srilanka. It is a famous pilgrimage site and tourist attraction with unparalleled natural beauty. It is one of the Char Dham of India comprises Badrinath, Dwarka, Puri, and Rameshwaram. Every tiny piece of Rameshwaram is directly associated with Rama and  Ramayana.

In my earlier blog as I have mentioned that I was planning from Bengaluru to Rameshwaram but there was no train directly to Rameshwaram, it was from Madurai. So after an entire day of exploration to Madurai, My next trip was to Rameswaram. Train was at 6:00 AM from Madurai Junction and it dropped me around 10:00 AM at Rameshwaram. Journey Through train was one of the most mesmerizing moments for me and infact for anyone who will visit Rameshwaram as it gives a typical south Indian olfaction during its Journey and it passes through most of the remote areas of Southernmost India which can not be easily touched.

From railway station in Rameshwaram, I got a local auto to reach the temple. Booked a hotel Hotel Temple Tower  near to the temple, the rate of room was economical compared to its services. You can divide your tour options into two parts, an entire day for sightseeing and temple and another day for Dhanuskhodi(Ram Setu). You can cover both these in a single day but it will be like touch and go.

Sightseeing in a private vehicle

Sightseeing in Rameshwaram in a private auto.

After taking some rest at hotel I booked a local auto for Rs.600 for Dhanushkhodi and some sightseeing which are away from the temple. If you have a lack of time you can skip some places as temple town has numerous temples and you can cover important ones. Most of the cab and auto drivers have printed lists of tourist places along with rate lists. But ignore this, as I have collected all the information and have scheduled a two-day trip so I was aware of what I have to cover within a single day. You should have aware of the places otherwise driver will escape to save time.

Since Rameshwaram is a small island so don’t expect traffic, signal, and police. Entire traffic is in the middle of street.

Due to its mythological significance, it is included on top for the places to visit in Rameshwaram in a single day. Don’t get mislead by its name this temple is mainly dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of twelve Jyotirlinga temple. This temple is famous for its collection of Lingas which are mainly made up of sand, stone, and other materials. It is one of the very few temples in the world which is built in Dravidian style architecture. Anyone’s journey to Rameshwaram is incomplete without paying homage to this temple.

After taking a holy bath at Agni teertham I entered the temple through East gate where police searched and had to pass through metal detector. First went to the northeast corner, worshiped and after praying there came out and entered into main temple which is at the center.East gate is generally crowded as people after taking a holy bath at Agni teertham entered through this east-facing Gate.

According to mythology here the main deity Lord Shiva was installed by Lord Rama himself and worshipped in order for the forgiveness for the killing of a Brahaman(Ravana). This temple has two lingas. According to legend Lord Rama sent Hanuman to Mount Kailash to bring Linga but he was delayed meanwhile Maa Sita created Linga with sand, thus temple has two lingams. But as per Rama instruction, Linga brought by Hanuman is worshipped first. Thus according to such great mythological, religious significance, it is the most prominent religious spot among Char Dham.

Visit in the temple is incomplete without holy bath at 22 holy tanks or well as it has religious significance in history. For this, we have to officially pay Rs. 25 and temple staffs will pour water on us. To perform this ritual it took around 1 hour and we have to follow the traditional dress code. It is believed all sins are washed and health problems are regained after bathing from these tanks.

According to historians, this temple was built in the 12-13 th century. Temple has two Gopuram one on East facing and another on West facing. Temple has world’s second-largest pillared corridor consists of 1212 pillars made from single stone, make it definitely the best place to visit in Rameshwaram.

Since I visited the temple on second day but according to its religious importance, I have to blog earlier.

  • Camera and electronic gadgets are not allowed inside the temple.

3)    Dhanuskodi

Ruins at Dhanuskodi
Ruins at Dhanuskodi

Dhanuskodi is last southern tip between India and Srilanka. I was so amazed that I was at only 14 Km away from Srilanka. It is surrounded by Bay of Bengal on one side and Indian ocean on either side merging at very teap in such a way that you can self distinguish high tide on one side to the low tide on the latter.

Ruins at Dhanuskodi

In 1964 a massive cyclone swirled across Dhanuskodi, devasted everything and most of the people lost their lives and became deserted. Government labeled this place not suitable for human habitation and declared as GHOST TOWN. Travelers come to see its ruins. Earlier Dhanuskodi was not accessible but now is easily accessible by four-wheeler to a certain point and from there have to board to a mini truck or tempo to take you to ruins.  Journey through this is itself fascinating as we’ll be traveling across a thin strip of white sand with sea on both sides.Traveler looking for an offbeat destination and to feel peace and serenity along sandy shoreline allure to this place. Due to its extreme location and breathtaking natural beauty, it is the most fascinating place to visit in Rameshwaram.

According to mythology, it is believed that it is the same bridge constructed by Lord Rama with the help of Hanuman and his Vanarsena with floating stone to rescue Maa Sita from Ravana. This 48 km chain of Bridge made up of limestone shoals starts from Dhanuskodi of Pamban island through Mannar island to Srilanka. You will get amazed that through this bridge you can easily reach to Srilanka through the walk and with help of a small boat at some place as sea tide are very calm throughout this bridge which generally doesn’t occur. In many research, it is proved that it is not natural it is human-constructed but has no exact date of origin.
